Following next Sunday’s FBD final against Roscommon (at 2pm in Tuam Stadium), the Galway footballers will embark on a rather difficult National Football League division two campaign.

Barna had a hurling team in 1964 and handball was very popular in the area, but anyone wanting to play football would have togged out for An Spidéal. Local games were played in Sean Lydon’s field along the shorefront, halfway between the church and Barna school. Kevin Curran and Nicholas O’Fegan were the founders of Barna GAA Club in 1965 and they managed to field minor and junior teams that year. Their junior team had the honour of playing the club’s first competitive match on May 30 1965 against a Bohermore selection known as John F Kennedy’s. Kennedy’s won by a point.

Sarsfields produced the goods when it mattered most to collect their first senior county title since 1997, beating Craughwell by 2-10 to 0-14.

Maigh Cuilinn won the Connacht Club Intermediate title in 2008, and they were not too far away from winning a second provincial crown last Sunday in Pearse Stadium when they went down 0-9 to 0-8 to a physically strong and well organised Hollymount/Carramore (Mayo) side.

The replay of the Galway county senior hurling final takes place this Sunday at Pearse Stadium (1.45pm) with Craughwell and Sarsfields doing battle once again, to see who will take home the Tom Callanan trophy for 2015.

They would have never assumed it was was going to be easy, but the willingness to dig out a result when things seemed to be going against them against Melvin Gaels is something that Hollymount-Carramore will have been delighted to have shown on the field a fortnight ago. On Sunday the south Mayo men have the chance to create another little bit of history for themselves when they take on Moycullen to be crowned the intermediate kings of Connacht.

Following Corofin’s facile 4-14 to 2-6 demolition of St. Mary’s (Sligo) last weekend at Markievicz Park, and Castlebar Mitchels impressive 3-8 to 0-13 victory over Clann na nGael at Hyde Park, the sides will meet in the Connacht club senior final in Tuam Stadium (2pm) on November 22.

The Maigh Cuilinn Intermediate footballers will have to bring their “A” game to Pearse Stadium this Sunday (2pm) to beat a highly rated Hollymount side in the Connacht Intermediate football final. 

Even with only a few minutes to go last Sunday afternoon in Kenny Park and with both sides vying for their first senior title in a long time, and nothing between the sides on the scoreboard, there was a really muted atmosphere in the ground. There was barely a murmur on the packed terraces and the stand was never in any potential danger of being shook to the rafters.

It was a good day for Galway club football last Sunday at Hyde Park with both Galway intermediate and junior champions, Maigh Cuilinn and Clifden,  qualifying for their respective Connacht finals.
